I visited the Heritage
Academy today. We are going to supply them with 12 computers
for a school lab. I've had a little experience doing this a long
time ago for my kids' schools but today things are much better. I
used to have to go to every computer once in a while with a CD or
floppy to do updates and changes to the Ministry of Education
licensed software.
For this client, we didn't have a pre-conceived plan. After
speaking with the Vice Principal and techie teacher, I decided that
we should set up an LTSP environment for them. The advantages are
numerous but basically you can manage all computers and user IDs
from one machine. Nothing is stored on the clients so you can
easily set up a backup procedure for documents. You don't even need
a hard drive on the client computer.
This school specializes in children with Dyslexia and ADD so some
extra software such as screen reader will be part of the C4C suite.
LTSP is brand new for me so I'm going to set one up in my house
first. As most things in Linux go, it looks complicated at first
but after some reading it looks like an Alternate Ubuntu 10.04
install on a machine with two nics will do the trick.
I've created a new topic on our website to track my efforts with
this. I welcome any assistance or suggestions you can give me. I
believe we will be delivering the computers in about a week.
