Hi everybody,

I recommend Linux Mint 13 Maya.  It is a Ubuntu clone with a 5 year LTS.  You have a choice of desktops:  LXDE, KDE, Mate, and Cinnamon.  The Mate desktop is identical to Windows XP.  It does not use the Unity desktop :-) !  It is now first in the Distrowatch popularity ratings.  I am using it and loving it.

Puppy 5.4 Slacko (Slackware) is a very good choice for older machines.  Puppy also comes in other versions: Precise (a Ubuntu emulator) and Wary for very old machines.  Precise has access to the Ubuntu software repository.  I have tested it with some problems.  Should you have a handicapped 500 mhz CPU, Puppy 5.4 Slacko will work very well.

Although Puppy is a simple efficient system, it is tricky to install.  I have compiled instructions (attached) formatted to fit a CD plastic case.  I have done some installations and swear by it !

and it's pretty quiet so let's see if anybody is out there.

Since Ubuntu 10.04LTS is now no longer supported we must move to 12.04LTS. I currently am working on a modest machine, 500mhz 728MB ram, and I think I should use XUbuntu 12.04 since it's also supported for 3 years.

Any comments? Is anybody out there?
