Many thanks, Tracy

Ref “Revised Draft Technical Specifications for Communication in the LRIT System”, Table 2, “LRIT Positional Data (Position Report) Messages”.

The table is over-prescriptive and does not reflect what is actually available and transmitted by current ships’ equipment.

(1) Latitude and Longitude

Latitude and Longitude are taken from the inbuilt or onboard GPS and are presented as Degrees, minutes and decimals of minutes (to 2 decimal places)

e.g. 59 57.92’ N, 30 14.20’ E

which is 59 degrees 57.92 minutes North; 30 degrees 14.20 minutes East – and perfectly adequate.

To require the format to be degrees, minutes and seconds would require expensive changes to onboard equipment

(2) Time Stamp 1

Date and time are similarly taken from the inbuilt or onboard GPS and are presented as Day, Month, Year, Hour, Minute

e.g. 16-SEP-06 07:04 (which is self-explanatory; seconds are not transmitted)

To require the format to be year, month, day, minute and seconds would require expensive changes to onboard equipment

Please ensure that the LRIT ad hoc engineering group reviews these specific parameters and does not set over-prescriptive requirements that could require expensive changes to or complete replacements of shipboard equipment. We are not starting out to design new shipboard equipment, I believe, and should accept the standard reporting formats that are already provided by the existing equipment.

Many thanks

Brian
