I agree.  I know that the municipality spent a lot of money to paint the bikes lanes… in November! And now they are mostly worn off.  I hope the contractor that they used will be planning on re-doing the paint job at no additional expense.

I am also not willing to ride that close to the edge unless absolutely necessary.  I’m not up for wiping out in a pothole and there are many.

On a positive note, when Jim Waters hit that pothole last summer, Matt called the city and they did patch it the NEXT day!  Kudos to public works for listening and helping us stay safe.

   On this, the main safety item I think city needs to address is bike lanes in the area. It's all well and good painting pretty lines all over the place, but personally I won't be riding my road bike on them as this is where all the crud ends up and besides, the surface is usually broken up or just too rough. OK for mountain bikes I guess, but useless for us. OK, we typically ride out of town, but not always. I think it is good that there is some sort of "barrier" between the cars and bikes, but I think that this whole issue was contrived by non-cyclists.

Comments?

Geoff.

=================

Attention Chatham Kent Riders, with the opening season upon us we are looking for suggestions for the website cycleck.ca which is down for the time being, creating better the awareness, safety and opening the door of more of the community to enjoy the sport and participate. The Silent Ride in May is just one of the suggestions that have been made for this year. As well the VIA Bike Train program has added Southwest Ontario as a pilot for this year. Promoting Chatham to be one of there stops show casing historical sites of the Underground Railroad and local wineries.  Possibilities of a printed map showing routes like what Ottawa has with the National Capital Commission (I believe Dan has one from Ottawa).

All suggestions welcome.

Rachael

======================

NOTE Matt and I have been invited to a CycleCK.ca meeting scheduled for this Thursday evening where some of CK big wigs to be there. Anything we as a group can come up with I shall be glad to present.

From Safety Concerns on certain roads to Tourism

Lets not forget that we are the one riding in this area so what can be done to make it better or attack more people, even tourists...

Dan
