we had 2 new riders last week and almost lost one due to the sprints. we did do two sprints on the way to prairie siding bridge. with the comments made we adjusted the pace to accommodate our new riders. this doesn't mean we are not going to do sprints, just discuss the purpose and goals.

maybe having better communication to start the ride next time we won't leave anyone with the feeling of not fitting in. knowing who will be riding at the slower pace we can try to explain our goals and establish the basics so they will feel comfortable.

it wasn't long ago that i found 21 a comfortable pace. so i remember how it felt to hold the group back. as a result i didn't ride as often last year. i thank everyone for helping me to improve this year. i think the group dynamics is what makes the rides so enjoyable. it showed in the grand bend ride. we worked together to help each other making the ride more enjoyable for all.

with the nights getting shorter, it is harder for us to travel the same route. getting back safely is a priority for us. as the rides get shorter there will be less chance for those dropped to join in with the later group.

we will have challenges with 2 or 3 levels of riders. trying to find a happy median for the benefit of the group will require us to work together.

hope i didn't ramble too much, just some thoughts in between customers.. :)
have a great day all!

Here's my two cents worth. I too feel for the recreational riders that may feel they are not a part of the "group" as they either do not wish to ride flat out or they currently lack the ability to ride longer and faster. Some do not have road bikes and nor can they afford a $3K bike, BUT encouragement is what they need. Perhaps we, the intermediate riders, should offer to take turns to ride with an encourage the newer riders. Yes, on that night, we won't get a 'work out' as usual. but I'm sure the newer and slower riders would appreciate the gesture. Having said that, I don't seem to read comments by the recreational group. THEIR input is what we need to see. Are they even on the mailing list ?
More comments?
Geoff.

My thoughts too, Dan! And don’t forget many recreational riders don’t necessarily want to go faster or further, although over time these will naturally occur. They just want to go for a leisurely group ride.

From a personal point of view, when school restarts in Sept, Weds nights become a “three places at once” issue for me. Having another ride night, regardless of speed (Intermediate or recreational) would be great.

nope... this is currently bwing done on Wednesday nights...

But in my eyea we are letting the other recreational riders behind as we are not waiting for them. :-(

So now people need to choose between both on the Wednesday ride... We must not forget our roots as to where most were at just 1 year and a half ago.. pretty much at the same level as our newer riders.

I personally feel this Intermediate Cycling Night should be held on another open night to avoid splitting the groups... As it can happen that we will leave a slower rider behind on his own due there is no one to ride with them defeating the Wednesday Ride purpose.

Also the Intermediate Group can do greater distances then the recreational riders due to speed difference. So once we pass the mark where the other group changes directions there is no possibilities falling back.

I like seeing wanting to get better and faster but not at the expense of loosing riders. Waiting SUX but you know what.. we are all out enjoying the same sport.

Matt at the start of the season we had touched this topic on adding another night... was the general consensus for a Thursday or Friday Add On?

Would this work for most on this list... just wondering.

We could split the Wed group into 2 – that way if someone wanted to try the faster ride and was dropped, they could fall back to the other group.

Perhaps a Monday or Thursday evening would be better. It wouldn't disrupt the tuesday group.

Hi All:

Several of us have been discussing the need for an intermediate riding group.  A time where a slightly more  experienced rider can practise group riding skills and challenge their abilities just a little further.

I'd like to get the ball rolling on this if people are interested.  So... What do you think of this...

Tuesday Night 6:30

Meeting Place Rona ( this way we can head out of town without worrying about traffic so much)

Average Speed +-30K to start

Skill to be worked on:  Keeping our lines tight, cycling through the group, increasing speed and endurance

I'd like to invite a couple of the Regular Tuesday night people out as well in hopes that we can learn form your experience.  I heard some great things about how a couple of the guys from the Tuesday night group helped bring the cycling group together on Sunday as a working team. (Thanks).   Minus the accident I heard that the ride was very unified and enjoyable.  We would be grateful for any mentor ship that you would be will to provide.

I'm sorry but I don't know who it was that fell but I'm hoping you are doing ok.  Let us know if you need anything.

Anyway....if interested....I'd like to start tomorrow night :)

Let me know if you are in.   And please share any other ideas you may have.

Ann
