1) Debating Results: At the Winter Carnival Debate Tournament -held in Montreal by McGill University- Carleton had an outstanding showing. Padraic Ryan of Carleton with his partner Teddy Harrison of UBC beat out a team from Queen's University to win the tournament. Padraic also had the second highest speaker ranking in the tournament. Other Carleton teams placed 21st and 41st. At the Dalhousie Invitational, Carleton also had an stunning showing by having three out of the eight teams in the break round. Padraic Ryan was the top individual speaker, and his partner Michael Powell was fifth. We would like to congratulate Padraic and Teddy on winning Winter Carnival, and all Carleton debaters on their incredible performance in both tournaments.
2) "Does God Exist": The Carleton Campus Crusade and the Carleton Secular Alliance are hosting the "Does God Exist" debate on Wednesday at 7:00 in the Fenn Lounge. Garnett Genuis, representing the Carleton University Debate Society is moderating the debate. We wish Garnett and all the participants good luck in the debate. You can find out more information at
www.doesgodexist.ca
3) Panda Cup: The English Debate Society of Ottawa University and the Carleton University Debate Society have always had a traditional rivalry, and the Panda Cup, on February 2nd and 3rd, is the annual showdown between both clubs. This is a great tournament to attend: it's fairly informal and there is lots of opportunities to meet other debaters and improve your skills. If you want to attend, email
exec@carletondebate.org or post on the appropriate CUSIDnet thread. We hope to see you out there!
4) Upcoming Tournaments: The French Debate Nationals, the Leger Cup and the English Nationals are all coming up. For more information about participating, email
exec@carletondebate.org or post on the appropriate thread on CUSIDnet.
5) Dorchester Cup: Carleton is once again hosting the Lord Dorchester Debating Cup, and we need volunteers. The Dorchester Cup is held on March 2nd to March 4th, and if you want to help out in any capacity, please email Josh Prowse at
dorchester@carletondebate.org. This is a great way to help out the debate club, and also gain experience in judging and other aspects of debate.
