Hi fellow musicians and music teachers,
I just wanted to make you aware of a weekly reading session I'm starting at Alcorn Music Studios this Saturday, Oct 5 from 2-3PM. It's called "Sight Reading for Jazz/Pop musicians" and is modeled after a fitness drop-in course more than a traditional class. Everyone brings their instruments and we play through melodies and chord changes from the jazz standard repertoire.
My goal is to give students who wish to improve their reading a regular chance to make this practice part of their schedule. Like going to a group class at the gym, it's something that's easier to motivate yourself to do with others.
For the class itself I plan to run tunes at various tempos to give beginner students multiple passes to listen, sing, and/or play through melodies of various levels of difficulty. For more advanced students, the goal is perfection, playing exact note lengths and articulations and finding guide tone lines to navigate through the harmony.
If you know anyone that you think might enjoy or benefit from this kind of thing, please pass this on. For now students are to bring their own instruments, but I have several keyboards and melodicas for pianists and others wishing to work on their keyboard skills as well. I would appreciate a heads up email at steve@alcornmusicstudios.com so I can set the room up appropriately and make copies of any non-real book materials.
For the first few weeks the flat drop in rate is only $5 to cover supplies and the room rental. Hopefully with enough interest we can keep the rate this low.
Email me with any questions, I am excited to finally start this weekend- this is something I've been planning for several months.
