Wow, Ian!! I did not even know that. Thank you.
Unfortunately, when you are up against someone who uses the member list
to solicit votes, it completely skews the playing field. And so, sadly,
I got an unsolicited message from Matthew Gamble asking for my vote to
give him a 3rd term. Anyone here who is a CIRA member probably got one
too. Unless you know Mr. Gamble through your profession or social
circles, it is completely legal but still in contravention of the spirit
of these elections as per the following item on the CIRA elections
information page:
"While CIRA is obligated by law to provide the list, we take the privacy
of member information seriously. CIRA strongly encourages members who
receive the list to only contact those members who are part of their
professional and/or social circle and to refrain from sending
unsolicited mass emails to respect members’ privacy. CIRA also requires
that any email sent to members not include tracking links and that
members’ information remain in Canada."
I have already forwarded my copy of the mailing to elections(a)cira.ca
along with paragraph from the elections page. I encourage anyone here
who feels so inclined and has no contacts with Mr. Gamble to also
contact elections(a)cira.ca objecting to the practice. Even if you have
already deleted that e-mail, they already have a copy from me. The more
people who contact them, the better. Most of the current "encouragement"
paragraph only exists as I have fought back each time asking the board
to set some conditions when I received information from many of you
about this practice and issues like tracking links included in the
message. At the end of this, whoever wins, I will, once again be
contacting the board about how unfair this is to all candidates who put
themselves forward on the member slate and asking them to find a better
way to deal with this problem.

I can only assume that you have obtained my email address through a list
you have obtained of CIRA members. I consider your use of this list
unethical as I have not received similar such mail from other candidates,
as well as a likely violation of CASL since I have not given consent to you
to receive this kind of solicitation.
I am CCing this response to elections(a)cira.ca and trust they will consider
the seriousness of this breach of trust.

Whew. There's actually been something of an exchange going on.
Matthew is avoiding accountability, claiming that.
- He and I are in the same professional circle because we were both
briefly on an ISOC Canada mailing list six years ago.
- He asserts what he did was ethical because he's not prohibited in
doing what he did (even though the guidelines "strongly encourage"
candidates from doing what he did).
- He's not breaking CASL because his was not commercial solicitation
(that's probably true), though he remains quite irritated by my continued
use of the term "spam" to refer to what he did.
He may continue to respond. I won't. The exchange in its current state is
all in the CIRA election mailbox; if what's there isn't enough to cause any
action, more of the same won't help.

Wow, totally brilliant. Surprising that he would respond -- and clearly
defensive. It may not cause actions on CIRA's part, but it will raise
concerns. All of this activity will be reported to the board. They don't
like it when their reputation gets a bit tarnished. And whoever is
sitting around the board table in November will be addressing this, one
way or another. If it is not me, and it probably won't be, I will be
writing another letter to the board, perhaps in conjunction with another
one of the candidates.

1. I do not know Matthew Gamble. This is an unsolicited mass spam email.
2. The message contains tracking links via his personal domain mgamble.ca that is hosted
outside Canada. CIRA says no tracking, and no information outside Canada.
3. A reply to the spam email sends my name and email address outside Canada into
Google.com via the MX record for his personal domain "mgamble.ca"
This CIRA board member and candidate has broken all these CIRA rules to spam votes for
re-election.
What are the consequences?

This is great, Ian. I will carefully share some of this info, without
any identification to you, as we move forward. The routing info is
especially controversial right now -- and might be a route to shut down
this practice. CIRA can't forbid the practice but I wonder if they could
forbid and foreign routing of such messages.
