CommuniFi Updates
NCF has launched CommuniFi, a free community WiFi network, to help address the digital divide. Supported by CIRA, Ottawa Community Housing, and Hiboo Networks, the first phase began in December 2024. It includes a core wireless network at 251 Donald Street and free WiFi in the common areas at 251 and 255 Donald Street. Phase two will expand to connect 10+ community organizations within a 5km radius, covering Vanier, Overbrook, and parts of Lowertown and Sandy Hill. The pilot targets Vanier due to its significant social inequities and lack of affordable internet access. NCF also offers one-on-one support and workshops to ensure safe and confident internet use. User data is anonymized, with security enhanced by CIRA's DNS Firewall service.
