I'm 100% for re-educating people both riders and drivers. Putting something out to the
schools. It seems a lot of students don't know the rules. Even just holding a seminar
every opening season to reinforce the rules and anything that has changed could help.

OK so I printed all the replies, even Matt’s as it is a good
sign of how many riders in Chatham feel and where they ride…
This needs to be corrected and trust me, I always rip at him for
doing so. He used to live in Windsor and he stressed to me that it is not a
concern over there.. only in Chatham.
I also printed some stuff from the
www.mto.gov.on.ca site on Cycling and the
law.

Ann, thanks. In a nutshell, I guess that's what I mean. some sort of education
for all concerned and that is what needs to be brought up as a suggestion.
Geoff.

Thanks for bringing up the cyclist responsibilities
Geoff. It would be really nice to see some sort of education piece
regarding cycling and road safety for our community. Both riders and
drivers seem to be extermely unaware of what the safest practices and laws for
cyclist are.

Me again !!
Let's not forget the DOG issue in the country.
I've already been bitten on the leg. (That dog is dead now !!!) Dog owners in
Chatham-Kent have a responsibility to control their animals by law.
To comment on the writer below, I understand his point, BUT it's
illegal to ride on the sidewalk. He should ride the road and learn to deal with
the idiot drivers. Car drivers need to realize that bicycles are vehicles and
should be given proper clearance and respect. Also bicycle riders need to learn
that they to are a vehicle and should be ridden on the RIGHT with the flow of
traffic. The people who (are told to) ride against the flow on the left are
asking for an accident. It's far harder drive around someone coming toward you
than it is to pass in the same direction.
OK I'm done bitching for now, but I think these points are
valid.

We need to have some awareness for drivers. I personally ride the
sidewalk because its too dangerous to ride the road. Agreed the debris along
the curbs is bad for cyclists. Even though I ride a mountain bike the point
remains.
For me its safer to ride the sidewalk and worry about cars coming
out of driveways, (disc brakes rule the stopping world.) I ride against
traffic on the sidewalks so I can see oncoming turning traffic in to the
plazas. Riding on the other side means I cant see who is turing into me.
Its happened befor. A car cut me off, misjudging my speed. Forcing me to lock
the brakes.
Mostly im worried about the side mirrors, of passing traffic
being too close to my elbow.

On this, the main safety item I think city needs to address is bike lanes in
the area. It's all well and good painting pretty lines all over the place, but
personally I won't be riding my
road bike on them as this is where all the crud ends up and besides, the
surface is usually broken up or just too rough. OK for mountain bikes I
guess, but useless for us. OK, we typically ride out of town, but not always. I
think it is good that there is some sort of "barrier" between the
cars and bikes, but I think that this whole issue was contrived by
non-cyclists.
Comments?
Geoff.

hehehe Rach tried to send this out and seems to have failed on
her :-)
=================
Attention Chatham Kent Riders, with the
opening season upon us we are looking for suggestions for the website
cycleck.ca which is down for the time being, creating better the awareness,
safety and opening the door of more of the community to enjoy the sport and
participate. The Silent Ride in May is just one of the suggestions that have
been made for this year. As well the VIA Bike Train program has added Southwest
Ontario as a pilot for this year. Promoting Chatham to be one of there stops
show casing historical sites of the Underground Railroad and local
wineries. Possibilities of a printed map showing routes like what
Ottawa has with the National Capital Commission (I believe Dan has one from
Ottawa).
All suggestions welcome.
Rachael
======================
NOTE Matt and I have been invited to a
CycleCK.ca meeting scheduled for this Thursday evening where some of CK big
wigs to be there. Anything we as a group can come up with I shall be glad to
present.
From Safety Concerns on certain roads to
Tourism
Lets not forget that we are the one riding in
this area so what can be done to make it better or attack more people, even
tourists...
Dan
