Dave said to me recently "We agreed at the board a while ago to support
12.04 LTS (.../assume he means Ubuntu)/. We also discussed this at the
AGM on Saturday."
So I'm using Ubuntu on most machines but XUbuntu 12.04LTS on modest ones.
I'm being rather passive in the AGM/board meeting area so I will follow
what they decide without complaint. I do have Mint on a netbook and
it's working fine. I have 12.04 now running on my everyday machine and
am OK with it. I don't like change and resisted until the last minute
to upgrade.

Hi everybody,
I recommend Linux Mint 13 Maya. It is a Ubuntu clone with a 5 year
LTS. You have a choice of desktops: LXDE, KDE, Mate, and Cinnamon.
The Mate desktop is identical to Windows XP. It does not use the
Unity desktop :-) ! It is now first in the Distrowatch popularity
ratings. I am using it and loving it.
Puppy 5.4 Slacko (Slackware) is a very good choice for older
machines. Puppy also comes in other versions: Precise (a Ubuntu
emulator) and Wary for very old machines. Precise has access to the
Ubuntu software repository. I have tested it with some problems.
Should you have a handicapped 500 mhz CPU, Puppy 5.4 Slacko will work
very well.
Although Puppy is a simple efficient system, it is tricky to install.
I have compiled instructions (attached) formatted to fit a CD plastic
case. I have done some installations and swear by it !
