Good morning
Attached is a copy of the presentation made to the Rotary Club with the addition of the 'Next Steps' slide that was discussed at our last meeting. The PPT is intended to serve as a generic presentation that will provide common messaging when members of the Active Communities Committee present information on bicycle racks.
If you have any recommendations regarding how the presentation can be improved, please send me an email or give me a call, I'd be pleased to update the 'master' version that is filed on our shared directory.
Cheers

UPDATE - CycleCK.ca Meeting thism Thursday and need your input
by Dan Brousseau
Hey everyone,
Just back home.... what can I say about this eveing meeting...
There was the topic of Bike Stands and more stands and more stands LOL.
Someone was very adamant on them racks and their cost being too high even thus there was a bidding process done through the city.
Seems there is a $60,000 fund set asside for them and the way it is being approached it bit by bit... (estimated cost for them is $170-$200 installed - little expensive but good with labour)
The Cycling Council of Chatham is looking at get an 8% of the poopulation to be riding their bikes by 2020
They are looking on meeting with company CEO's on promoting cycling to work.
There is also about 1.5 million dollars for cycling in the CK area...
Some disscussion as to where the bike grid would be at...
Now this is looking at a 5 year plan but some of the following to be touched in the Chatham area
Paths or lanes on the following was disscussed;
McNaughton from the College to Sandy
Keil from Richmond to Prestancia project
Sandy from the bridge to Gregory
Lacroix from Park Ave to Bridge
Queen from Indian Creek all the way downtown
There was a mention from Richmond and Bloomfield to Riverview and then to Keil
St-Claire from Gregory to Walmart
As surprised as I was Grand between Keil to Sandy was not there... Man that bit is ROUGH
Other topics where not realy touched due to the overly extensive disscussion on bike rack cost/bidding... but I did bring it up to the president to the Cycling Counsil (durring the bike rack crap) of the comments from our group.
She stated she's in charge of also getting the stuff redy to educate the puplic... the catch phrase that will be used is
Same Road
Same Rules
Same Rights
All are concerns that was brought is already on her list.
Now after the meeting was done I managed to speak to James(Rides with us Sundays) who is part of the Cycling Counsil on who they approche for the Police to enforce present laws.
Seems this was already done and there was a few Radio add by the CK Police to let Cyclists know they should not be riding on the side walks.
To me this is not enforcing the law but seems they are also putting in considerations the risks involved... Bad Cyclists/Bad Drivers
James is on my side with this... if the law is known and enforced to everyone this will curb the bad habits of people... The CycleCK.ca guy thinks that they working on this...
But working on it is useless as they are not enforcing the laws that are already in place.
So seems there is a meeting with City Hall on the 16th and James took the info on the Cycling Laws to throw the book at them saying what the police are doing is a waste of time as the work is already in place to enforce them.
So any how Matt and I did the best we can to represent us as a group for the cycling community.
Now my last comment is a question to all... would you like that I give them access to being able to email in to this list on any updates that come through for the CK Cycling Project. Reason I ask is they would like everyone to at least be on their emailing list by sending them your email address, but the simplest way I think is giving them permission to post as Non member to this list instead. Keeping your info private up to a point.
Let me know
Dan
ps Matt if I missed anything go ahead and add it. :-)

Hit by a car
by Geoff Clement
This is from my friend Dave Hime (currently in Florida for the winter). Illustrates why driver / rider awareness and safety are so important.
Hi Geoff,
I went out for a good ride yesterday & got whacked by a car on my way down to Sarasota. The driver, a girl, hit me. She came over the stop sign & hit me & then took off.
The police are looking for her but it seems nobody got a license # so I'm not holding my breath !!!!! I have the usual skin off my right side, knee, elbow & shoulder. I had quite a bang on my head & must have passed out, I woke up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. They kept me there for a few hours & x-rayed me & did a scan of my head. The doctor said I was very lucky, I didn't have any broken bones & my helmet probably saved my life. It was split open on the right side so that could have been my head !!!!
Well Geoff I am feeling a little woozie so will sign off. Hopefully talk to you in a couple of days when I'm feeling better.
Dave

FW: CycleCK.ca Meeting this Thursday and need your input

We need to have some awareness for drivers. I personally ride the sidewalk because its too dangerous to ride the road. Agreed the debris along the curbs is bad for cyclists. Even though I ride a mountain bike the point remains.
For me its safer to ride the sidewalk and worry about cars coming out of driveways, (disc brakes rule the stopping world.) I ride against traffic on the sidewalks so I can see oncoming turning traffic in to the plazas. Riding on the other side means I cant see who is turing into me. Its happened befor. A car cut me off, misjudging my speed. Forcing me to lock the brakes.
Mostly im worried about the side mirrors, of passing traffic being too close to my elbow.

On this, the main safety item I think city needs to address is bike lanes in the area. It's all well and good painting pretty lines all over the place, but personally I won't be riding my road bike on them as this is where all the crud ends up and besides, the surface is usually broken up or just too rough. OK for mountain bikes I guess, but useless for us. OK, we typically ride out of town, but not always. I think it is good that there is some sort of "barrier" between the cars and bikes, but I think that this whole issue was contrived by non-cyclists.
Comments?
Geoff.

=================
Attention Chatham Kent Riders, with the opening season upon us we are looking for suggestions for the website cycleck.ca which is down for the time being, creating better the awareness, safety and opening the door of more of the community to enjoy the sport and participate. The Silent Ride in May is just one of the suggestions that have been made for this year. As well the VIA Bike Train program has added Southwest Ontario as a pilot for this year. Promoting Chatham to be one of there stops show casing historical sites of the Underground Railroad and local wineries. Possibilities of a printed map showing routes like what Ottawa has with the National Capital Commission (I believe Dan has one from Ottawa).
All suggestions welcome.
Rachael
======================
NOTE Matt and I have been invited to a CycleCK.ca meeting scheduled for this Thursday evening where some of CK big wigs to be there. Anything we as a group can come up with I shall be glad to present.
>From Safety Concerns on certain roads to Tourism
Lets not forget that we are the one riding in this area so what can be done to make it better or attack more people, even tourists...

Dan,
I came across this website from a friend. Do you think we could sign up to be a "Ride of Silence" location? I could help by letting the media know but I need another rider to help me with some logistics. It is FREE to ride, participate etc. It's a peaceful and slow ride around the community in support of riders who have died or been injured. We would need to decide on a starting location... I was thinking either the Competitive Edge or Union Gas parking lot (just over the bridge). Then we have to decide on a route. I will contact the media to ensure we get coverage and radio announcements why we are riding slowly in a big group etc.

Info
by Dave
Well is everyone ready to start riding outside with this awesome weather we
have?
I have made it out a couple of times but other than that I haven't really
been on the trainer either.
I hate to keep asking but I was just wondering if anyone knows what is going
on with the riding gear?
I need to order some new riding gear but was wondering if we are still
getting the group gear.
If we are getting some group riding gear that would eliminate some of my
other order.
Any info would be great.
Hope to see you all soon.
