Hey Rand
Good luck on the Niagara MS ride. I have a colleague from London who is also
riding. Her name is Tracy Shepperd and she is from London. Say hi for me if
you see her and tell her not to be afraid of the hills.... she had a pic up on
the MS web site or on my facebook. There's only 650 in this one I'm sure you
will know the all personally by the end of the ride.

Wednesday's ride

I have a bone to pick with yesterday¹s ride. After riding more than 40K
together as a group, to split the group up for a sprint to the finish is
fairly pointless and displays more bravado than common sense. My
understanding of the purpose of the group ride is to share experience, so we
can all be safer, stronger riders. Please, correct me if I am wrong. When
the group falls apart at the end, it jeopardizes that safety. I also thought
that one of the main principals of the group ride is to ride predictably
maintain the line and the speed. If that is not the intent, please let all
riders of the group know ahead of time.

. I agree with Linda that we need to be careful about our verbage here.
Language can seem cruel in it's written form and easily misinterpreted.. We
have different types of riders here and all deserve their own respect and their
own forum to ride in. Sounds like we are having a few growing pains. Must be
why some of the cycling groups in other cities have such cute names for their
different types of rides. Saying that, it seems quite natural for us, as we
grow, to offer different styles of rides for different types of riders. We've
seen the need for this for quite some time. It doesn't mean that one group is
better than the other it just means that they have different goals.
Anyway...i'm rambling...I look forward to ironing out the details tomorrow
night.

Hi all;
I usually just read all the emails and keep up to date on what is going on but
thought I could add some insight into the topic. I know from my point of view I
was definately not at the level I am now when I first started. All the
encouragement and kind words as well as the advice on how to improve my skills
from the more skilled riders was extremely appreciated. I know that sometimes
others who ride with us on Wednesdays feel like they are not part of the group
when they are referred to as the slow group and sometimes they feel they are
looked down on. I personally just enjoy the ride and do what I can hoping that
each week I will improve and eventually be able to keep up with the medium group
( ha ha). Any way I just know that riding in the Grand Bend ride was a wonderful
experience for me and I have never felt like I wasn't part of the group. I would
hate to see us lose riders as we seem to grow each week but I understand the
perspective of those who are wanting to go all out. I'm sure we can come to a
compromise and make the group bigger and better all the time. I just want to say
thanks to all those who have been there to help me get to where I am today. I
never once thought I would be able to complete Grand Bend and I did it because
of all of you!

Hi all;
I usually just read all the emails and keep up to date on what is going on but thought I could add some insight into the topic. I know from my point of view I was definately not at the level I am now when I first started. All the encouragement and kind words as well as the advice on how to improve my skills from the more skilled riders was extremely appreciated. I know that sometimes others who ride with us on Wednesdays feel like they are not part of the group when they are referred to as the slow group and sometimes they feel they are looked down on. I personally just enjoy the ride and do what I can hoping that each week I will improve and eventually be able to keep up with the medium group ( ha ha). Any way I just know that riding in the Grand Bend ride was a wonderful experience for me and I have never felt like I wasn't part of the group. I would hate to see us lose riders as we seem to grow each week but I understand the perspective of those who are wanting to go all out. I'm sure we can come to a compromise and make the group bigger and better all the time. I just want to say thanks to all those who have been there to help me get to where I am today. I never once thought I would be able to complete Grand Bend and I did it because of all of you!

I believe that the rider that was almost lost last week was due to a pot
hole in the road. I don't think it was because of a sprint.
Lots of discussion and opinions. Why don't you meet 15 minutes earlier than
the ride and air your opinions and come to a mutual understanding.
If you want to ride fast or ride slow, the decision is totally yours to
make. Pick the pace your comfortable with and own it. Everyone has their
own choice of what they would like to do.

we had 2 new riders last week and almost lost one due to the sprints. we did
do two sprints on the way to prairie siding bridge. with the comments made
we adjusted the pace to accommodate our new riders. this doesn't mean we are
not going to do sprints, just discuss the purpose and goals.
maybe having better communication to start the ride next time we won't leave
anyone with the feeling of not fitting in. knowing who will be riding at the
slower pace we can try to explain our goals and establish the basics so they
will feel comfortable.
it wasn't long ago that i found 21 a comfortable pace. so i remember how it
felt to hold the group back. as a result i didn't ride as often last year. i
thank everyone for helping me to improve this year. i think the group
dynamics is what makes the rides so enjoyable. it showed in the grand bend
ride. we worked together to help each other making the ride more enjoyable
for all.
with the nights getting shorter, it is harder for us to travel the same
route. getting back safely is a priority for us. as the rides get shorter
there will be less chance for those dropped to join in with the later group.
we will have challenges with 2 or 3 levels of riders. trying to find a happy
median for the benefit of the group will require us to work together.
hope i didn't ramble too much, just some thoughts in between customers.. :)

Here's my two cents worth. I too feel for the recreational riders that may
feel they are not a part of the "group" as they either do not wish to ride
flat out or they currently lack the ability to ride longer and faster. Some
do not have road bikes and nor can they afford a $3K bike, BUT encouragement
is what they need. Perhaps we, the intermediate riders, should offer to take
turns to ride with an encourage the newer riders. Yes, on that night, we
won't get a 'work out' as usual. but I'm sure the newer and slower riders
would appreciate the gesture. Having said that, I don't seem to read
comments by the recreational group. THEIR input is what we need to see. Are
they even on the mailing list ?
