But anyhow, CBC news had an interesting article about running and how people are relearning to run barefoot and how they are finding it much easier on the joints. Just thought that I would share that with anyone interested... Sorry, no tidbits for us cyclists, perhaps next news item :)

Hi James, I tried to send an email to that address but it was returned because apparently there is no address for that. Can you see if there is another addy that I can use?
Thanks,

Brian,
If you want to send a message to all council members, including the mayor,
the address is
council(a)chatham-kent.ca
You can also go online to the municipal site, click on council and admin at
the bottom of the home page and proceed from there.

That is a good sign and it looks like the one meter clearance rule is

Cyclist struck after running stop sign
[cid:image002.jpg@01CB33C8.0EED4E60]
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. yesterday, a man riding a bicycle failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of Selkirk Street and Elizabeth Avenue in Chatham. While in the intersection, he was struck by a vehicle that did not face a stop sign (this intersection is a two-way stop - vehicles travelling Selkirk have to stop but vehicles travelling on Elizabeth do not). The cyclist was not injured.
The cyclist, a 29-year-old Chatham man has been charged with failing to stop for a stop sign.
The investigation revealed that the same cyclist had been struck by a motorcycle at the same intersection on July 26, 2010. He attended the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance to be treated for minor injuries. On that day, he was charged with failing to stop for police to identify himself.
The Chatham-Kent Police reminds all cyclists that the Highway Traffic Act defines a bicycle as a vehicle. Cyclists are therefore required to obey all traffic laws just as drivers do.

For once the Feds are ahead of the curve. The issue is that Proviincial Law and Regs. take precidence on non Federal
Land.
Nothing we can't change though by having CK adopt the higher standard!

Incident Learning & Prevention (ILP) Notification
by Laevens, Jennifer
This incident was reported through work… just a reminder use your lights and bright clothing.
P.S. I think the employee had to change his shorts! ☺
Jennifer
Date/Time Occurred:
Aug 4 2010 5:50AM
Location:
Dawn area
Description:
Incident Without Loss - On August 04, 2010, an employee was driving to work on a rural highway in the fog, before the break of dawn, when a cyclist on the highway with no bicycle lights, wearing dark clothing, was encountered. The employee just missed hitting the cyclist.
Contractor Involved:
No
Immediate Response:
Lesson Learned: Defensive driving techniques save lives. Also - if you choose to cycle on the highways or streets ALWAYS wear higher visibility clothing and have lights on your bicycle between dusk and dawn!
Thank you for your time.<http://SQLEPASSP/ReportServer$EPassProd/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fILP+Re...>

FW: Education for cyclists and drivers
by Member Services CCK
See below for the latest info on the ACSC educational effort. Laurel is
the Public Health Unit rep heading up this program.
In addition to the pull-up display that you have seen, expect to start
hearing radio spot announcements, and I understand that there have been
50,000 information brochures printed for distribution throughout the
municipality. As soon as I get the copy of that from Laurel I'll pass it
along to you, but you might see hard copies at some locations this
weekend.

Hi John. I am just trying to finalize several things at once here - so
we can go "live with our promo Friday. Will follow up and send to you
asap. The pull up displays will be in Chatham-and Wallaceburg Libraries
from Friday until the end of the month, with smaller similar posters in
all service centers and libraries, and a variety of other places
throughout the municipality.

Hi Laurel.
I'm in a great discussion on the internet with a large group of local
cyclists who are very interested in promoting the education of both
cyclists and motorists re co-existence on our streets and roads.
I think they will be very happy to see the materials you have been
putting together. They have seen the pull-up sign and are happy with
that - just would like to see it at many many locations.
Do you have a digital copy of the information pamphlet that you could
send me to share with these folks? I think that will also meet a lot of
their concerns. Anything else you can send me on this subject will be
appreciated.
