This week's Live Blues, Jazz & Other Possibilities
by Bluesandjazzguy
30 Dec 2008
As usual at this time of year, it's always best to confirm with the venues live music opportunities whether listed this week of note on the Ottawa Blues, Jazz & Swing Guide calendar:
There are some pre and New Year's Eve parties not listed on the calendar. It's best to use the venue links on the calendar to find out more for those musicians and venues who've not seen the benefit of listing them there.
More details on blues opportunities, can be found on Liz Sykes' blog, Ottawa Blues This Week.
For more jazz opportunities, check out Ottawa Jazz Happenings.
Other music news can be found an the Ottawa Blues, Jazz & Swing Guide Group on Facebook. If you're a Facebook member check out what else is going on. So far, the group has over 259 members from Ottawa and elsewhere. If you're not a Facebook member, the above link gives you the opportunity to join.
DAWG Day Afternoon Review - Ottawa All Blues Radio that had its licence approved by CRTC as you may know was sent back by the current government to review their decision after an appeal by a French radio competitor.
Here is the latest from Ed Torres, GM, SkyWordsRadio for your consideration.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support of our Blues radio applications.
We received an update from the CRTC on December 23rd. Essentially, they are going to re-hear the original applications and they are allowing all of the applicants to modify their applications to take into account the Minority Language communities in Ottawa and Gatineau.
We did some exhaustive engineering work and found 3 FM frequencies that we or other applicants could use to serve the Ottawa/Gatineau market. We hope that the CRTC will issue us the licence on one of these 5 potential available frequencies and licence as many other players as they deem worthy.
In the meantime you can help please send us a letter of support. It's really easy. Go to www.bluesincanada.com scroll down and click on the "CLICK HERE to SAVE DAWG FM" fill in the email fields and click send and please encourage your friends to do so.
You can also join our facebook group http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=6523208335
Please send a reply to this email and let us know if you want to be removed from this list.
Thanks, have a great new year

by Bluesandjazzguy
Hello everyone,
Please excuse this intrusion on your mailbox. A friend of mine who does a
lot of sound work for local music had all his gear and his van stolen

I thought many eyes are better than none so thought I'd share this in
case any of you happen to come across it. Please report any findings
directly to the police and notes below.
Thanks very much, and happy new year to all!

Pay-what-you-can Jazz Matinees on Saturday afternoons at Rainbow Bistro
by Bluesandjazzguy
This seems like a good way to get the word out.
This is Stacie Sivyer from the Rainbow Bistro
First of all I'm glad to hear that your baby is home safe and sound. We
need to hear more stories with happy endings.
on another matter:
2- we are looking for bands interested in getting their foot in the door at the Rainbow bistro
I'm currently wrapping up December few dates I have left are: Dec 8, 9, 18, 22, 26, 27, 28
and then we go into '09
The typical format is: load in at 8:15 sound check at 9 for 3 50 minute
sets from 9:45-1:15ish
For those of you who don't know we provide a full PA system and a house sound man. payment is
80% of the total door revenue usually set at $5.
I know that often it's not great money but consider it a black (as opposed to "in the red") rehearsal
space. All you would need are your instruments amps patch cords etc. we provide the rest.
3- We are starting up a Pay-what-you-can Jazz Matinees on Saturday afternoons 4-7 with Sonic Blue.
They are a great local jazz band please come by and check them out.
If anyone has any questions or comments I'd love to hear from you
please contact me at bowbabi(a)hotmail.com
thanks Stacie Sivyer

Hi Everyone,
My bass baby is home safe and unharmed!!! I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all of you for your concern interest and support in retrieving this most valued part of my world. That reinforces my belief that all musicians are part of the same "extended" family and I am grateful to be counted among you.
It turns out that the thief pawned it at a neighbourhood store within the hour of stealing it. He obviously had no idea what he had as he only got $70 for it!!! After all that is a cheap price for a 1990 Fender Precision fretless set up with an active EMG jazz pick up configuration.
In fact it is the only one like it that I have ever seen. So in this case all ends well. I will be much more careful in the future.
Lesson learned.
My best to all.
