You're invited to a seminar "What Every Jazz Musician and Singer Should Know About Band-in-a-Box"

We put this seminar on in November but a few people who expressed interest in it were unable to attend. Also, that seminar was strictly oriented toward singers but a lot of musicians have expressed interest so we've broadened the scope.
Subject: What Every Jazz Musician and Singer Should Know About Band-in-a-Box
Date: Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Time: 7:30 PM to approx. 9:00 PM
Place: Lab C046, Building C, Algonquin College, Woodroffe Campus (see map below)
Band-in-a-Box (BIAB) is an invaluable practice aid for any jazz musician; but it can be especially helpful for singers who have no other means of practicing with accompaniment at home or even determining the key for a particular song best suited to their vocal range. It is relatively easy to use and does not require extensive knowledge of music theory.
Many musicians and singers that I know and perform with either have BIAB on their computers but don't know how to use it to full advantage or have heard of it but aren't sure how helpful it might be to them. So I decided to organize this seminar to improve on these situations.
I've recruited guitarist Alf Warnock to help with the seminar. A former colleague at NRC, Alf introduced me to BIAB many years ago and is an expert on its use. I've learned a whole lot of new stuff from him already in preparing this seminar.
Here's what the seminar will cover -
Brief Overview of BIAB
- entering chords
- selecting a style
- setting tempo, number of choruses, ending, etc.
- changing key
- playing
First - Review of Key Signatures
- determining the key of a lead sheet (chart)
A Plea on Behalf of Transposing Instruments
The Details of BIAB
Entering Chords
- alternate chord spellings
Selecting a Style
Setting tempo, number of choruses, ending, etc.
Changing Key
- Is the key right in the first place?
Playing
- turning voices on and off
Entering Notes
Printing Charts
- Don't forget the horn players!
Free Files
There will be a charge of $5 each to cover the costs of reproducing hand-out materials and a CD with several hundred public domain BIAB files. (Or you can buy the instructors a beer at the pub after the seminar.)
Please let me know by return e-mail by Sunday January 17 if you'll be able to attend. We need to have a pretty firm idea of the numbers before producing the hand-out materials.
If you know someone that might benefit from this seminar, please forward this e-mail to them.
If you have any questions, please give me a call at 613-563-7044.

PS: I've sent this to those who attended the first seminar in the hope they may be able to pass it on to others who may be interested.
Go south on Woodroffe to the second entrance to the college, which is across from the park and ride. This entrance also has the greenhouse on your right as you turn. C Building is the large building to your left at the first stop sign. There is metered parking there, plus pre-payed ticket parking in front of C Building.
C Building: enter front doors and go directly down the stairs. Take the door/hallway on the left (you will be heading towards the parking information offices). Directly past that is the lab, C046.
