*Ottawa Blues Society Local Blues Challenge*
The Ottawa Blues Society will again participate in the Blues
Foundation's International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. The winner of
the OBS Blues Challenge will compete as OBS representative in the
International Blues Challenge to be held in Memphis, January 20-23, 2010.
We have scheduled three semi-final rounds at Tucson's (2440 Bank Street)
on Wednesday, September 9, Wednesday, September 16 and Wednesday,
September 23. Our IBC representative will be chosen at the final Blues
Challenge round on Friday, September 25, 2009.
For the purposes of the IBC, a 'band' is any act with three or more
musicians; vocalists are counted as musicians for the purpose of this
competition, and both electric and acoustic instruments are allowed. At
this local competition, bands will be judged by the same criteria used
for the International competition. Each band has 25 minutes to perform
and is given points based on Blues Content, Vocals, Talent, Originality
and Stage Presence. For full details on scoring criteria and official
rules, see the Blues Foundation website http://www.blues.org/ibc/scoring.php
Eligibility Requirements:
1. Band members must be 2009 residents of the Ottawa/Gatineau area
(approximately 100 km radius of Ottawa).
2. Each band must be available for all semi-final rounds and the
final round and must be able to travel to Memphis in January 2010.
3. Each band will play one 25-minute set.
4. All songs presented MUST be Blues (electric or acoustic), Rock/
Blues, Jazz/Blues, Country Blues or Rhythm & Blues.
5. Each participating band will provide the OBS with one original
recorded song for inclusion in the 'OBS On the Road to Memphis'
compilation. This compilation will be produced in limited
quantity and sold to raise funds for OBS expenses incurred in the
annual local competition.
Application information should include names and contact info for all
band members, a brief biography, a summary of the band's experience and
performance history and an audio sample of the band's music (link to
myspace, band website, MP3 or CD). You will be contacted for further
information following the submission deadline. Please address any
questions to liz(a)ottawabluessociety.com <mailto:liz@ottawabluessociety.com>
*Applications should be submitted via email to
boardmembers(a)ottawabluessociety.com

Re: [Ottawamusicians] Musician and Venue Involvement inottawabluesandjazz@lists.ncf.ca
by Bluesandjazzguy
I was asked for clarification of a badly worded 2nd last paragraph in my note sent yesterday
so I'm reissuing the note below with hopefully more understandable wording.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ottawabluesandjazz(a)lists.ncf.ca goes to about 300 subscribers, some who are
also part of this ottawamusicians(a)lists.ncf.ca you are part of.
Each week, when there's enough on the Ottawa Blues, Jazz & Swing Guide calendar
to justify my sending a note to my subscribers as there was this week, I send an alert
such as the one this week that's also on line: http://ottawa-blues-jazz.ncf.ca/OJAB14Jn09.htm
here as well as on Facebook.
There's no guarantee that I'll pick up on what's on the calendar and give it a mention. The only
guarantee is that if it's not on the calendar, it WILL NOT be covered.
The rest is, as I tell my ottawabluesandjazz(a)lists.ncf.ca subscribers "it's musician/venue
optional to post, and amend the listings as needed".
If a bend or venue is satisfied with whatever existing promo they do wherever they
already do it, and don't think it's necessary to offer some detail on the Ottawa,
Blues, Jazz & Swing Guide calendar or elsewhere, there's not much I can
do to help by highlighting the gig in my Ottawabluesandjazz list newsletter.
If you don't manage to get a satisfactory audience out for the little compensation
venues offer in the first place, they may not have you back for as little as that is.
For the bands that are doing all that works and brings in the crowds, not much is needed
on your behalf. For others who feel that maybe something is missing, possibly it's
the promotional part of your art? Who knows? That's left up to your own judgment.

I cannot help promote what those who judge their project or venue already sufficiently promotes
without detail on their offering will get the audience they expect to be at the door waiting to
justify the 'live music crumbs' the place is tentatively ready to put out for a band and judge
its popularity from the live-on-the-floor and bar and service profits.
For the bands that are doing all that works and brings in the crowds, not much is needed
