Deadline To Enter Extended Until November 1, 2012
October 11, 2012 - Due to high demand, the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) has extended the deadline for entering songs until November 1, 2012. ISC is open to amateur and professional songwriters, and entries are accepted online through the ISC platform, Sonicbids, ReverbNation, Broadjam, or through the mail. Within this extended deadline period, ISC will be offering some special promotions and incentives.
One of the most prestigious and respected songwriting competitions in the world, ISC gives away a total of more than $150,000 in cash and prizes. This year ISC has doubled the amount of merchandise for the Grand Prize winner to more than $40,000 in prizes plus $25,000 in cash (US). Additional prizes include a custom Lowden acoustic guitar valued at over $11,000, a Marshall full stack amp, a studio package from Solid State Logic, a duplicator from Discmakers, and much more. Not only do ISC winners receive great prizes and media recognition, but winners also receive a lot of industry attention. Many previous winners have gone on to great success and garnered record deals, publishing deals, licensing deals, and even Grammys. ISC's newest success story are past ISC winners Gotye and Kimbra whose song "Somebody That I Used To Know" recently charted at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for eight weeks in a row.
Entry information can be found at http://www.songwritingcompetition.com.
One of the most difficult challenges for artists is to get their music into the hands of the music industry's heavy hitters, yet ISC gives this opportunity to each finalist. Gerry O'Connor hails from Dundalk, a town close to the border with Northern Ireland, and is the product of four generations of fiddle players. His past recordings have focused strongly on local music and his work as a soloist and as a band member of Lá Lugh and Skylark is well known across the world. Over the past two decades he has recorded and performed with all the leading performers of the Irish music world including members of the Chieftains, Boys of the Lough, Planxty, De Dannan and Bothy Band. His solo album Journeyman has been hailed as one of the significant albums of Irish fiddle music. Gerry is also a violin-maker, music teacher and music producer and is currently directing a Traditional Music Initiative in a number of primary schools in the Drogheda area north of Dublin on the east coast of Ireland.
Martin Quinn comes from a family of musicians and raconteurs of traditional stories from just outside the village of Mullaghabane in South Armagh, in the north-east corner of Ireland. He has performed and recorded with a number of eminent line-ups including Lá Lugh, Dorsa, Josephine Keegan, Angelina Carberry, Paul Bradley and Cathal McConnell. His self-titled album with Angelina Carberry was included in the top 10 list of Traditional recordings by Earle Hitchner of the Irish Echo, a prominent newspaper within the Irish-American community in USA. Martin has developed an innovative and unique approach to playing the bass on the Button Accordion, developing and tuning new chords for the instrument based on the regulators of the Uilleann Pipes. He is also in keen demand as an accordion restorer and accordion tutor. www.reeltrad.com

Free tickets for a new Ottawa music festival this Friday and Saturday
by Brett Delmage
You can read this story, with links to IMOOfest and past articles, photos
and vdieos about IMOO at
http://ottawajazzscene.ca/_1003/news/5600-ottawajazzsceneca-wants-to-take...
--------------------------------------------
OttawaJazzScene.ca wants to take you on a free musical adventure this
long weekend!
The first IMOOfest, a mini-festival of creative, improvised music, will be
held on the evenings of Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, from 7
to 10 p.m. at Club SAW in Arts Court. And we're giving away IMOOfest
passes (a $25 value each) to listeners who want to try something musically
new and interesting this weekend.
Do you play or listen to jazz standards? Jazz vocals or big band? New or
classical music? Rock? Folk? Hiphop? Are you're unsure about or unfamiliar
with creative, improvised music? IMOOfest is an opportunity to try a
variety of interesting music, that can best be appreciated hearing it
played live. With four different concerts each evening by top Canadian
improvisers, you'll be able to explore the music and discover what you
like about it in a few hours. From solo saxophone to the IMOO Orchestra,
there will be a smörgåsbord of improvised music to sample.
There's a catch (but an easy one!)
You cannot have attended a regular IMOO Series concert as a listener
or performer before. We're seeking listeners who are unfamiliar with this
music but are sincerely interested in exploring new musical territory for
a few hours.
You have to tell us what you thought about the different concerts at
the end of the evening so we can share your musical discoveries and
reactions with our site visitors. All we want is your honest thoughts
about the music you heard, and how it relates to your own musical
experience and current likes. We certainly don't want to tell you what to
think of the music, nor are we looking for a detailed concert review. As
improvising percussionist Jesse Stewart (who will play at IMOOfest) said
at a past concert, how you interpret the music is up to you. This is your
opportunity!
Here's how to apply for the IMOOfest passes and your long weekend musical
adventure:
Please email editor(a)OttawaJazzScene.ca with your contact info,
including name, email address, and phone number(s) where we can quickly
reach you, and the information below. If you prefer, you can phone us at
613.454.5358 x4666 (IMOO) and reply to bullets 1-7 by voice.
Let us know what nights you will attend: Friday, October 5; Saturday,
October 6; or both.
If you're coming with a friend, have them apply as well, and let us
know you'll be attending and commenting together.
We'll be there to greet you when you arrive at Club SAW.
Confirm that you are willing to share your opinions about the music
you heard with us after the shows each night that you will attend. We'll
want to talk with you for about 5 minutes - or more if you have a lot you
want to say.
Tell us a little bit about your current musical likes and dislikes.
Which live musical concerts you heard in the last year (of any kind of
music) did you really enjoy? A few sentences is fine, but make it
interesting. If you want to share longer thoughts, please do so.
Tell us briefly why you would like to attend IMOOfest to hear
something new. One sentence is fine, but feel free to say more. We're
looking for listeners who are excited about a weekend getaway!
The deadline to apply is this Friday, October 5 at 10 a.m. We will make a
selection from all the entries received by 11 a.m. on Friday, October 5,
and let everyone who contacted us know by email who has been selected and
will receive passes. A minimum of two passes will be awarded, and possibly
more depending, on the entries received.
We eagerly await your entries, and look forward to seeing you at IMOOfest
this Friday - and jointly discovering some new music, never to be played
the same way again.
