> GigSpace is excited to present this new concert series featuring senior jazz musicians from Ottawa and Gatineau. This series was created with the intent of preserving our jazz history by sharing the artists stories, photos, and a performance. Each concert will be recorded for archival purposes.
>
>
> We are delighted that this series was made possible with a grant from the City of Ottawa.
>
> Our first concert features the J.P. Allain Trio. Jazz pianist J.P. Allain will be performing with jazz drummer Glenn Robb. Glen will have on display his amazing collection of photos from the 1950’s showing many of the bands and visiting musicians performing at the Standish Hall. Glenn Rob spent many nights watching these musicians. J.P. also spent many evenings surrounded by the musicians while he worked at the Standish as a busboy. They rubbed shoulders with the likes of Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett and Louis Armstrong. Rounding out the trio will be a bassist Normand Glaude.

Deadline To Enter Extended Until November 4, 2013
October 7, 2013 - Due to extremely high demand, the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) has extended the deadline for entering songs until November 4, 2013. ISC is open to amateur and professional songwriters, and entries are accepted online through the ISC platform, Sonicbids, ReverbNation, Broadjam, or through the mail. Within this extended deadline period, ISC will be offering some special promotions and incentives.
One of the most prestigious and respected songwriting competitions in the world, ISC gives away a total of more than $150,000 in cash and prizes (including $25,000 cash for the Grand Prize winner alone), and gives songwriters 22 different categories to enter their songs into. Sight Reading Workshop
by Tim Bedner
================
Hi fellow musicians and music teachers,
I just wanted to make you aware of a weekly reading session I'm starting at Alcorn Music Studios this Saturday, Oct 5 from 2-3PM. It's called "Sight Reading for Jazz/Pop musicians" and is modeled after a fitness drop-in course more than a traditional class. Everyone brings their instruments and we play through melodies and chord changes from the jazz standard repertoire.
My goal is to give students who wish to improve their reading a regular chance to make this practice part of their schedule. Like going to a group class at the gym, it's something that's easier to motivate yourself to do with others.
For the class itself I plan to run tunes at various tempos to give beginner students multiple passes to listen, sing, and/or play through melodies of various levels of difficulty. For more advanced students, the goal is perfection, playing exact note lengths and articulations and finding guide tone lines to navigate through the harmony.
If you know anyone that you think might enjoy or benefit from this kind of thing, please pass this on. For now students are to bring their own instruments, but I have several keyboards and melodicas for pianists and others wishing to work on their keyboard skills as well. I would appreciate a heads up email at steve(a)alcornmusicstudios.com so I can set the room up appropriately and make copies of any non-real book materials.
For the first few weeks the flat drop in rate is only $5 to cover supplies and the room rental. Hopefully with enough interest we can keep the rate this low.
Email me with any questions, I am excited to finally start this weekend- this is something I've been planning for several months.
