*Ottawa Blues Society Local Blues Challenge*
The Ottawa Blues Society will again participate in the Blues
Foundation's International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. The winner of
the OBS Blues Challenge will compete as OBS representative in the
International Blues Challenge to be held in Memphis, January 20-23, 2010.
We have scheduled three semi-final rounds at Tucson's (2440 Bank Street)
on Wednesday, September 9, Wednesday, September 16 and Wednesday,
September 23. Our IBC representative will be chosen at the final Blues
Challenge round on Friday, September 25, 2009.
For the purposes of the IBC, a 'band' is any act with three or more
musicians; vocalists are counted as musicians for the purpose of this
competition, and both electric and acoustic instruments are allowed. At
this local competition, bands will be judged by the same criteria used
for the International competition. Each band has 25 minutes to perform
and is given points based on Blues Content, Vocals, Talent, Originality
and Stage Presence. For full details on scoring criteria and official
rules, see the Blues Foundation website http://www.blues.org/ibc/scoring.php
Eligibility Requirements:
1. Band members must be 2009 residents of the Ottawa/Gatineau area
(approximately 100 km radius of Ottawa).
2. Each band must be available for all semi-final rounds and the
final round and must be able to travel to Memphis in January 2010.
3. Each band will play one 25-minute set.
4. All songs presented MUST be Blues (electric or acoustic), Rock/
Blues, Jazz/Blues, Country Blues or Rhythm & Blues.
5. Each participating band will provide the OBS with one original
recorded song for inclusion in the 'OBS On the Road to Memphis'
compilation. This compilation will be produced in limited
quantity and sold to raise funds for OBS expenses incurred in the
annual local competition.
Application information should include names and contact info for all
band members, a brief biography, a summary of the band's experience and
performance history and an audio sample of the band's music (link to
myspace, band website, MP3 or CD). You will be contacted for further
information following the submission deadline. Please address any
questions to liz(a)ottawabluessociety.com <mailto:liz@ottawabluessociety.com>
*Applications should be submitted via email to
boardmembers(a)ottawabluessociety.com

Ottawa Jazz Happenings vs. Ottawa Jazz Scene
by Bluesandjazzguy
Hi again.
I've now received clarification from Gavin McLintock that Ottawa Jazz Happenings
will continue to serve its 800 plus subscribers and that Ottawa Jazz Scene is
an independent approach in keeping the Ottawa jazz audience aware of what's
going on.
To have jazz gigs and other jazz news appear in Ottawa Jazz Happenings, please
send the details to ottawajazzhappenings(a)jazzworkscanada.com the last e-address
I have for this service.

Hi,
I got the following latest Ottawa Jazz Happenings of 13 July 2009 as many
musicians on the jazz side also likely have.
While the new web based approach definitely looks good, it's not yet clear to
me if this new www.OttawaJazzScene.ca site just supplements or replaces
Ottawa Jazz Happenings. I guess that will be clarified in time. In the meantime,
this provides at least one more place to promote jazz gigs at the contact
info below.
I have adjusted in the meantime my web links to accommodate this change as
best I can understand what it involves.
I would suggest that any clarifications needed be posted to the
ottawamusicians(a)lists.ncf.ca list as well as to the Ottawa Jazz Happenings
list by Brett and Gavin who are members so jazz musicians will know whether
there are now two contact points or if one replaces the other.

This will be my final issue as volunteer editor of Ottawa Jazz Happenings and

2. Editor Brett Delmage says goodbye and thanks
This will be my final issue as volunteer editor of Ottawa Jazz Happenings and
JazzWorks Connections.
It has been a pleasure to support JazzWorks, and live jazz and improvised music
in Ottawa, and to meet and serve musicians, listeners, jazz campers, and
venues, during the past 82 issues. I'd like to thank all of you who took time
to say hello in person, or to write me with corrections and comments. Thank you
to everyone who respected the Sunday night deadlines, and who helped me keep
the listings accurate and complete. I'm proud of our collective accomplishments
and progress this past year.
In part, I chose this time to wrap up my volunteer efforts because all the
announcements for 2009 Jazz Camp registration have been made (don't forget to
register by Wednesday!), and there are also fewer event listings now that
summer is underway.
I am excited to continue as part of the Ottawa-Gatineau jazz and improvised
music scene, as editor and publisher of my new project, www.OttawaJazzScene.ca.
It was launched during the Ottawa Jazz Festival in order to connect with
Festival attendees. I wanted to get festival-goers to think beyond the Jazz
Festival, to become aware of and enjoy listening to live jazz for more than 11
days a year. This has been a growing interest of mine for years, and I am
pleased to finally do something concrete about it! We started by reaching out
to thousands of Festival-goers this year to inform them about the new site.
The growing length of announcements I jammed into the email newsletter in
recent times was burying listings. Yet I felt the announcements were important
to jazz fans. Even more could have been said.
www.OttawaJazzScene.ca supports these extended communications better, as a
website foremost. OttawaJazzScene.ca has feature stories, reviews, news,
event listings, and more that simply couldn't fit into the existing email
format and were beyond its mandate. We will also be presenting
performance and jazz-event listings in new formats, and in web listings,
and with tools that will help you easily get the event into your calendar
so you won't miss it.
Please also send your event listings to events(a)OttawaJazzScene.ca so they can
be included in the listings. I'd especially like to hear from you when you have
or know of an interesting story, or project in the works, or even a content
idea.
My initial involvement with JazzWorks was photographing Jazz Camp in 2007. You
can view my photographs of Jazz Camp at
http://www.jazzworkscanada.com/html/Brett2007/index.html . Doesn't it look like
a fantastic experience? It was for me.
Consider registering for 2009 Jazz Camp if you are a musician, at
www.JazzWorksCanada.com (by Wednesday!) Or attend, help organize, or donate to
next year's JazzWorks fundraiser. This year's premiere event was the most
enjoyable fundraiser I've ever experienced.
I'd like to thank the JazzWorks gang:
* Anna Frlan
* John Geggie
* Judy Humenick
* Gavin McLintock
for all their incredible past efforts for JazzWorks and Jazz Camp and inviting
me to be part of it. While being editor is a more visible volunteer activity
that often gets kudos, Gavin, Judy, John, and Anna do an incredible amount of
work behind the scenes to make the JazzWorks Jazz Camp workshop happen every
year. I know they are looking for your continued participation in, and in
support of Jazz Camp. Don't forget to register, and to thank them too. It's
summer now. Buy them beers. :-)
Enjoy the music, and I hope to see you at www.OttawaJazzScene.ca and in the
clubs and concerts in the future.
Please do not reply to this email as I will not see your response. Contact me
at the email address below. Thank you.
