MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - CALL FOR COMMENTS
My name is Andrew Christie and I was recently elected President of the
2004-2005 Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS). I would like to
inform you of the opportunity to give your input regarding CUDS' direction
for the upcoming year as the executive is currently in the planning
stages.
We will be discussing a wide span of issues including fundraising, hosting
and attending tournaments, and recruitment/retention ideas. However all
pertinent ideas are desired.
Please post your ideas on the appropriate CUSIDnet thread (entitled Exec
seeking ideas for direction of CUDS in 2004-2005) or email the executive
directly at exec(a)carletondebate.org if you don't use CUSIDnet.
Following the meeting, the executive will produce a road map on our
direction for next year. It will provide the general thrust of the
society covering issues as already mentioned and new developments. We
would like as much input as possible in the creation of this document and
your input is appreciated.
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email me
directly at president(a)carletondebate.org.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

- Freethought.ca Launched
Current CUDS members Wayne Chu, Mike Powell, and Padraic Ryan and former
CUDS members Luke Cote, have teamed up to launch a new site Freethought.ca
The aim of the site is to provide a forum for people across the country to
discuss matters and inform their fellow citizens of important events
throughout Canada and around the world. The most important function of
the site is what we call the 'infolinks' section. This page
http://www.freethought.ca/infolinks.php provides everyone the ability to
bring a news story to our attention and the attention to everyone who
visits freethought.ca. This may resemble some other popular headline news
pages, but the difference is you're providing the headlines.
We hope all of you visit and contribute to the site regularly and feel
free to let others know about the services freethought.ca provides.

Fat Albert's is located on 1871 Bank Street, near Heron Road. The Society

The official discussion forum of the Society is on CUSIDnet. You will
increasingly see in this upcoming year that Society discussions will take
place there. This is a place to talk about Society business as well as a

CUSIDnet, you would have known that the year-end social was actually on
Saturday. So stay up-to-date and get online!

CUDS Amateur Hockey Game
Some CUDS members are going to get together to shoot a puck around in a game of road hockey. It is currently scheduled for next Sunday afternoon (April 18). If this time is good for you, indicate that you can come on the appropriate thread on the CUDS forum: "And now for something completely different."
Official end of the year dinner and party
There is currently a plan to hold an official CUDS end-of-year dinner and party. It is tentatively schedule for this Sunday, April 18 at Fat Albert's, after the aforementioned game of pick-up hockey. These will be completely separate events; you will be able to attend one without going to the other. The details are on the CUDS forum thread entitled Official end of the year dinner and party. Once the details are finalized, an email will be sent out.
Waterloo's Summer Tournament
The following teams have been decided on for Waterloo's summer tournament based on those who have expressed interest in attending:
Ben/Brittany
Jean/Wayne
Jeff/Mike
Dan/Raza
Judge - Ike
Everyone must pay $25 except Ike who will pay $20. Make checks payable to the "Carleton University Debating Society." See the relevant CUSIDnet thread for details. There will be additional charges for transportation the weekend of the tournament.
Register for the CUDS Forum
We'd really like everyone to take the time to register for the CUDS online forum to keep up-to-date with the latest CUDS happenings, and with debate-related events on campus that are not announced via this email newsletter. Yes, this means you, Liam! Here's the steps:
1. Register for CUSIDnet
2. Email me your user name.
Plan for Summer Meetings - When and Where?
There is some discussion about where and when summer debating meetings will be held. We will decide after exams are over. The current plan is to hold weekly meetings at the UofO, as articulated in the relevant CUSIDnet thread.
New Executive Photos Online
See who your new CUDS executive is. Everyone has their photo online except for Wayne Chu, a publicity-shy recluse (hey, until he takes over and starts writing these emails I have full editorial control :).

CUSA Declares CUDS 2003/04 Club of the Year!
The Carleton University Debating Society has been declared the CUSA Club of the Year. This award recognizes CUDS' outstanding success this year at tournaments, our tremendous dedication when running weekly meetings, the helpful assistance we provided to other clubs (such as moderating the recent Abortion debate), our unprecedented community involvement (such as coaching Merivale and Judging Ashbury), our presence on the nation stage whilst making a name for Carleton (CUDS member Wayne Chu being Executive Director of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate and our networking with the University of Ottawa's English Debating Society), and our active participation in CUSA (FACCS board, ad-hoc meetings). This award wouldn't have been possible without you - congratulations!
Regular Meetings End with the End of Classes
Regular meetings are hereby cancelled. Meetings during the exam period will be scheduled on an ad hoc basis on the forum. Just create a thread announcing when you'd like to meet and if there's interest, we'll book a room.
CUDS Annual General Meeting (AGM) Next Week
The CUDS Annual General Meeting is set for Wednesday, April 7th at 5:30 in 101 Azrieli Theatre. If you need to vote by proxy, please contact CUDS President Mike Powell. At this AGM, CUDS will elect our executive for the 2004-05 school year. We are currently looking for someone to take on the role of Vice-President for Debate (responsible for organizing CUDS participation in external debating events and organizing internal CUDS events according to the CUDS constitution). If you are interested in running for this position, let the CUDS community know by posting to the relevant thread on the CUDS forum. How 'bout it, Jerrett or Drew?

Radio Show Tuesday 8:00-9:00 am
Every Tuesday Morning from 8:00-9:00 am, the official CUDS Radio Show, Four Idiots and a Mike, appears on the Tuesday Special Blend on the Carleton University station CKCU 93.1FM Ottawa. Focusing on the current issues of the day, the show is an unscripted, candid, and thought-provoking forum where members of the Carleton University Debating Society flesh out the ideas from the far right, the far left, and all political stripes in between. Mike Powell, our illustrious host, is a Political Science student at Carleton University. In addition to hosting Four Idiots and a Mike, he also currently serves as the President of the Carleton University Debating Society.
Panta Rei
My term as CUDS Vice President is winding down to a close. As control of the Communications Directorate slips from my grasp, I have no doubt that it will be carried off in unprecedented and unpredictable directions in the coming year. Best of luck to whomever takes over my role next year, and farewell dearest readers. To everyone on the 2004/05 Exec: have fun reinventing the Club, kids. I sure did.
Nunc dimittis servum tuum. Sic transit gloria mundi.
