On November 9th to 11th Queens University is hosting the Chancellors Cup.
This is the last English tournament of the semester and is always one of the
most fun tournaments of the year. We are still looking for people to go so

2) French Novice Training Day in Sherbrooke
In order to prepare for the upcoming P.E.T cup at U of O, Sherbrooke
University will be hosting a novice training day on November 3rd. It will be
a one day event that will feature 4 training rounds. If you are interested

3) P.E.T. Cup at the University of Ottawa
On November 9th to 11th, the FDS of U of O will be hosting their annual
Pierre Elliot Trudeau Cup. This is a French tournament in Canadian
Parliamentary style and is the only one this semester. All those who are
interested should post on CUSIDnet in the relevant thread. If you have any

4) Xerxes
CUDS' annual high school tournament, the Xerxes Cup will be held November
16th and 17th. This is always one of the most fun weekends of the year and
Carleton has built its reputation on running killer tournaments. Please sign
up on CUSIDnet if you are going to be there for the weekend. If you have
received club money to go to tournaments this year then it is expected that
you will judge/volunteer at the tournament. If you wish to be more involved
in the organizing aspect of the tournament then please contact
exec(a)carletondebate.org or post on the relevant CUSIDnet thread.

Debate: Press Release for Guindon

This past weekend the Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS) competed
in the Father Roger Guindon Cup hosted by the English Debating Society of
the University of Ottawa. This was the first tournament of the year
featuring over 50 teams from schools all over Central Canada. At this
tournament Carleton managed to achieved its best ever results. Carleton
placed 3 teams in the top ten and two teams in the semi-finals of the
tournament. As well, Carleton's contingent also featured the 4th place
public speaker and the top novice at the tournament.
The team of Romeo Maione (I Journalism) and Adam Coombs (III History) placed
6th after the round robin to qualify for the semi-finals where they
ultimately lost to the winners of the tournament. They finished in 7th place
overall. The team of Garnett Genuis (III BPAM) and Remi Kanji (I BPAM)
placed 8th after the round robin to also qualify for the semi-finals. They
ended up losing in the semi finals and ultimately placing 8th overall. In
addition to this success, the team of Daniel Westlake (III Poli-Sci) and
Andrew Lawrence (III Poli Sci and Philosophy) placed narrowly missed making
the semi-finals and ended up placing 9th overall. Placing 3 teams in the top
ten is the most number of teams CUDS has ever placed in the top ten of any
tournament.
In the individual speaker category Garnett Genuis was the 7th place speaker
overall speaker. Adam Coombs and Andrew Lawrence also placed in the top
twenty speakers. As well, Remi Kanji won the award for top novice speaker.
In public speaking Blair Stein (II Journalism) placed 1st in the elimination
rounds of Public Speaking and ended up placing 4th overall.
Overall this was an extremely successful weekend. CUDS hopes to build off
this success this weekend at the Hart House Invitational held at U of T.

Congratulations to our new Vice President French Yannick Lepage and our new
Novice Rep Tyler Pirie.
2) Guindon Details
For all those going to Guindon we have decided upon pairings so please check
CUSIDnet for details in that regard.
In terms of transportation the U of O shuttle leaves Carleton at 4:25 so
for those interested we will meet at 4:10 in front of the Steacie Building.
For everyone else, we will meet you in room 147 of the Fauteux building on
the U of O campus by 5:30. Please do not be late!
The tournament will have two rounds Friday night followed by a social and
four rounds on Saturday followed by dinner and a social Saturday night.
Sunday is the break rounds, finals and awards.

1) Novice Rep Elections
The elections for Novice Representative will be held this Wednesday at 7pm
at our regular meeting. For those interested in running please e-mail your
intention to run to exec(a)carletondebate.org and post your platform/relevant
experience on CUSIDnet. You do not need to attend the Wednesday meeting if
you want to run, simply post on CUSIDnet and e-mail the exec. All novices
may vote in the novice rep elections and if you cannot attend the Wednesday
meeting you may send a proxy vote to president(a)carletondebate.org and
vpadmin(a)carletondebate.org. If you have any questions feel free to contact
us via e-mail, Facebook or CUSIDnet.
2) Vice-President French Election
The election will be held this Wednesday at 7pm. The two members running for
election are Alexander Bourbonniere and Yannick Lepage. Please see CUSIDnet
for their platforms or to pose questions to them. All members who had
voting rights at the AGM and are still Carleton students may vote. As well
any novice who attended the Novice tournament OR 6 meetings this year may
vote. If you cannot attend the Wednesday meeting we encourage you to send a
proxy vote to president(a)carletondebate.org and vpadmin(a)carletondebate.org.

3) Guindon at U of O
This coming weekend U of O will be hosting their annual BP tournament. We
have 14 people signed up right now to debate which is awesome. If you are
unsure whether you have signed up for Guindon or not, either check the
sign-up list on CUSIDnet or e-mail exec(a)calretondebate.org. The absolute
final deadline for sign-up is this Wednesday. If interested please post on
the CUSIDnet thread by Wednesday. We will send out more info regarding
details later in the week.
4) Hart House Invitational at U of T and Yale IV
Due to a lack of interest in attending the Yale IV we may end up cutting it
out of the schedule. That being said if you are interested in going then
sign up before Wednesday at 4pm. As well if you are interested in attending
the Hart House Invitational then sign up on CUSIDnet ASAP. We encourage
anyone who has yet to sign up for an out of town tournament to do so.

There are many exciting tournaments coming up this semester. All of these
are open to everyone and we want to send as many people as possible to

1) Novice Rep Elections
Elections for Novice Rep will occur during the regular Wednesday meeting on
October 10th. All those who are interested in running for the position of
Novice Representative should post their intention to run and any relevant
experience on CUSIDnet. Also anyone interested in running MUST e-mail their
intention to run to exec(a)carletondebate.org. The Novice Rep is responsible
for representing the interests of all novices, serves as a member at large
on the executive and holds the fifth seat on the Tournament Selection
Committee which determines who attends tournaments. Only novices are
eligible to vote in the Novice rep election and if you cannot attend the
meeting on October 10th then please send your proxy vote to
exec(a)calretondebate.org no later than 6:00pm on October 10th.
2) VP French By-election
With the resignation of Alex Grinton as VP French there is now an open space
on the executive. The by-election for VP French will take place on October
10th at the regular debate meeting. Anyone interested in running should post
their platform on the CUSIDnet forum and MUST e-mail
exec(a)carletondebate.orgto express their intentions. All members who
have attended one external
tournament (Novice this year counts) or attended six debate meetings this
year are able to vote. If you cannot attend the meeting on October 10th then
please send your proxy vote to exec(a)calretondebate.org no later than 6:00pm
on October 10th.
3) Upcoming Tournaments
There are several exciting tournaments coming up in the next couple months.
Due to the huge amount of interest we have had in attending BP Nats we will
not be able to send everyone who has applied. However there are lots of
other tournaments to apply for and everyone who is interested in attending
other external tournaments is encouraged to apply.
i) Guindon
U of O will be hosting their annual invitational on the Weekend of October
12th to 14th. The tournament will start at 5pm on Friday night and promises
to be a great time. This tournament we will be a pro-aming so all novice
debaters will be paired with an experiences debater. We encourage everyone
to sign up for this tournament and anyone who is interested in going should
post on CUSIDnet by this Wednesday to confirm numbers.
ii) Hart House Invitational
Hart House Debate Club at U of T will be hosting their annual invitational
tournament on the weekend of October 19th to 21st. Hart House always puts on
a great tournament which features a banquet in their great hall. If anyone
is interested please post on the relevant thread on CUSIDnet.
iii) Yale IV
Yale will be hosting their annual invitational tournament on the weekend of
October 26th to 28th. We will be leaving on the Thursday afternoon and
returning the Sunday morning from Yale. This is a great chance to debate at
and see one of the most amazing university campuses in North America and
meet people from all across North America. We also need a driver for the
tournament. If you are interested in attending please post by October 20th.
iv) BP Nats
Thanks to everyone who applied. The TSC will make its decision tomorrow
morning and we will inform those chosen by tomorrow evening. If you are not
selected please apply for other tournaments on CUSIDnet.
v) Chancellors Cup at Queens
Queens University will be hosting their annual Chancellors Cup on the
weekend of November 9th to 11th. This is the first CP tournament of the year
and is always a great time. If anyone is interested please post on the
relevant CUSIDnet thread.
vi) PET
The first French debating tournament of the season hosted at U of O. It will
be the weekend of November 9th to 11th as well. Again, if interested please
post on the relevant CUSIDnet thread.
4) CUSIDnet
CUSIDnet is CUDS' home on the internet. This is where we sign up for
tournaments, announce club news and generally discuss anything ranging from
news to music to movies. All members are strongly encouraged to sign up. To
do so go to www.cusid.ca/community and create a user account. From there
scroll down to the Carleton Forum and send a private message to either of
the forum moderators requesting access to the Carleton University Forum.
Alternatively you can also e-mail exec(a)carletondebate.org with your exact
username and we will let you in to the forum. If you are having problems we
will be helping people sign up after the meetings this Wednesday and Friday.
5) Locations!
As per the e-mail sent out this weekend we have room locations for the next
two weeks. For Wednesday we will be in SA 315 at 7pm and for Friday we will
be in Tory 315 at 4pm. See you then! We welcome new members at all our
meetings.
6) Xerxes Cup
This is our annual high school tournament and is the other side of our
debate clubs activities. Hosting tournaments is what Carleton's reputation
is built on and we hope to continue that this year. Xerxes will be on the
weekend of November 16th and 17th (Friday evening and Saturday) and is
always one of the best weekends of the year. If anyone is interested in
helping organize the tournament please e-mail the exec over the course of
the next month. This is a great opportunity for novices who want to be
involved in the organizational aspect of debate to take part.
