1) Debating Results: At the Winter Carnival Debate Tournament -held in
Montreal by McGill University- Carleton had an outstanding showing. Padraic
Ryan of Carleton with his partner Teddy Harrison of UBC beat out a team from
Queen's University to win the tournament. Padraic also had the second
highest speaker ranking in the tournament. Other Carleton teams placed 21st
and 41st. At the Dalhousie Invitational, Carleton also had an stunning
showing by having three out of the eight teams in the break round. Padraic
Ryan was the top individual speaker, and his partner Michael Powell was
fifth. We would like to congratulate Padraic and Teddy on winning Winter
Carnival, and all Carleton debaters on their incredible performance in both
tournaments.
2) "Does God Exist": The Carleton Campus Crusade and the Carleton Secular
Alliance are hosting the "Does God Exist" debate on Wednesday at 7:00 in the
Fenn Lounge. Garnett Genuis, representing the Carleton University Debate
Society is moderating the debate. We wish Garnett and all the participants
good luck in the debate. You can find out more information at
www.doesgodexist.ca
3) Panda Cup: The English Debate Society of Ottawa University and the
Carleton University Debate Society have always had a traditional rivalry,
and the Panda Cup, on February 2nd and 3rd, is the annual showdown between
both clubs. This is a great tournament to attend: it's fairly informal and
there is lots of opportunities to meet other debaters and improve your
skills. If you want to attend, email exec(a)carletondebate.org or post on the
appropriate CUSIDnet thread. We hope to see you out there!
4) Upcoming Tournaments: The French Debate Nationals, the Leger Cup and the
English Nationals are all coming up. For more information about
participating, email exec(a)carletondebate.org or post on the appropriate
thread on CUSIDnet.
5) Dorchester Cup: Carleton is once again hosting the Lord Dorchester
Debating Cup, and we need volunteers. The Dorchester Cup is held on March
2nd to March 4th, and if you want to help out in any capacity, please email
Josh Prowse at dorchester(a)carletondebate.org. This is a great way to help
out the debate club, and also gain experience in judging and other aspects
of debate.

Debate: Worlds Results
by Carleton University Debating Society
CONSTRUCTIVE POINTS
1. UBC Worlds Results
2. New Debating Year
3. Panda Debate
4. Upcoming Tournaments
5. Lord Dorchester Cup
1. UB Worlds Results: Over the Winter Break, CUDS sent three teams, one
judge and one tabs director to the Worlds Debating Championship in
Vancouver, hosted by the University of British Columbia. Carleton had a
really good showing this year: out of over three hundred teams, Carleton A
placed 65th with 16 points. Carleton B placed 136th with 14 points, and
Carleton C placed 217th with 12 points. Padraic Ryan had the top speaker
scores from a Canadian team, and Garnett Genuis had the third highest
speaker scores from a Canadian team. Our congratulations go out to all of
the Carleton debaters that went to Vancouver over the winter holidays and
debated.
2. New Year: As 2007 rolls around, we'd like to remind all members that the
regular debating meetings start on Wednesday at 7:00 in 316 Southam Hall.
Friday meetings are still in 234 Tory at 3:30. If you haven't been able to
come to as many meetings as you might have liked in the first semester, this
is a good opportunity to catch up with debating and get into practice.
3. Panda Debate: Along with the new year comes our traditional
no-holds-barred debating tournament with our Ottawa University' English
Debate Society. Held on the Friday and Saturday of February, the winners of
this tournament get to keep the traditional panda for the year. Last year,
Carleton debaters Adam Coombs and Garnett Genuis won the tournament and the
panda from EDS. We're looking to defend the Panda this year. This is a
great tournament for everyone to go to as it is in Ottawa and has a friendly
environment. If you haven't been able to get to a tournament so far this
year, this is a really good one to attend. Contact the executive at
exec(a)carletondebate.org if you want to go to Panda or want more information.
4. Upcoming Tournaments: Along with the Panda Cup, we are sending people
to many tournaments this semester, including Sodales at Dalhousie; Winter
Carnival at McGill; North American Championships at Bates College, Maine;
and the Leger Cup in Guelph.
5. Dorchester: CUDS is also hosting a tournament, the Lord Dorchester Cup
during March 2-4. Our tournament director, Josh Prouse is looking for
volunteers to help out with the tournament. If you would like to help out
or want more information about the Dorchester Cup, email Josh at
dorchester(a)carletondebate.org.
