Debate: New Friday and Wednesday meeting locations

Hey, Good news -We have a location for the next 2 Meetings on friday and wednesday. This friday, today- we will be meeting today at 4pm in the Tory Building in room 215, and for the same next 2 weeks. For the next 2 weeks, we will be meeting wednesdays at 7 pm in southham 315. Novice Tournament Final Details and More

1) Novice Tournament 2) CUSIDnet 3) Up Coming Tournaments 4) Up coming Public Debates 1) Novice Tournament We have six teams confirmed for the Central Canadian Novice Championships at York University. For all those attending we will be leaving from Residence Commons at 10am tomorrow morning. Please don't be late. We will be stopping somewhere on the 401 for lunch and should get to York at about 4pm. On the Friday night there will be a variety of options for the social and one of them is dodgeball. For those who would be interested in playing dodgeball, bring gym cloths with you. Saturday will be slightly more formal in regards to dress so bring some nicer cloths. Dinner on Saturday won't be provided so bring some money and we will all go out to eat somewhere. On Sunday we will leave York at around 3:30 and should get back to Ottawa at about 9:30pm. One final note, bring a travel mug for coffee or tea, you'll want it! 2) CUSIDnet CUSIDnet is CUDS' home on the internet. This is where we sign up for tournaments, announce club news and generally discuss anything ranging from news to music to movies. All members are strongly encouraged to sign up. To do so go to www.cusid.ca/community and create a user account. From there scroll down to the Carleton Forum and send a private message to either of the forum moderators requesting access to the Carleton University Forum. Alternatively you can also e-mail exec(a)carletondebate.org with your exact username and we will let you in to the forum. 3)Up-Coming Fall Semester tournaments There is a large amounts of tournaments coming up this semester. Sign up for these is on CUSIDnet. We encourage people to sing up early for any and all tournaments. The Tournament Selection Committee will make their decisions shortly regarding who will be attending the tournaments. Also if you are over 21 and have a valid drivers license please indicate this as we need drivers. This semester we will be sending teams to the following tournaments: Guindon at U of O on the weekend of October 12th to 14th. We encourage all debaters to attend this tournament. Hart House Invitations at U of T on the weekend of October 19th to 21st. Yale IV at Yale University on the weekend of October 25th to 28th. BP Nats at University of Alberta on the weekend of November 2nd to 4th. Chancellors Cup at Queens on the weekend of November 9th to 11th. PET French Tournament at U of O on the weekend of November 9th to 11th 4) Public Debates We will be hosting two public debates in the month of October. One will be hosted with the Israeli Awareness Committee and the Jewish Student's Union regarding West German reparations for the Holocaust. The secoond one will be hosted with CDAC regarding issues facing those with disabilities. Novice Tournament and World's Selection

1) Novice Training Day 2) Novice Tournament 3) World's Selection 4) Up coming Tournaments 1) Novice Training Day Wrap-up A big thanks to everyone who came out to Novice Training Day. It was a great success and everyone learned a tremendous amount. Thanks especially goes to Mike Koterly and Erik Estaugh for giving up there day to help. For those who missed the training day we have an audio recording of the seminars which we can distribute if interested. We hope to see everyone out at our meeting on Wednesday. The meeting will be in the Prescott Multi-purpose Room in Prescott. 2) Novice Tournament We have received the names of a number of people interested in going to the Novice Tournament at York University. We will be leaving from ResCom at 10:00am on Friday. We will return to Carleton on Sunday night probably around 10pm. Accommodations will be provided at a hotel close to York University. In terms of clothing, Friday is pretty relaxed in terms of dress while Saturday and Sunday is normally a little more formal. We do however need final confirmation of all people who are going by Wednesday. If you singed up for the tournament please e-mail exec(a)carletondebate.org or message me on Facebook with final confirmation. 3) World's Selection For all those people who have applied for Worlds, we will be having the debate-off this week. Possible times include Tuesday evening at 7pm, Wednesday afternoon starting at 2, Thursday evening starting at 7pm. Please e-mail your availability ASAP to exec(a)carletondebate.org. 4) Up coming Tournaments There is a large amounts of tournaments coming up this semester. Sign up for these is on CUSIDnet. Debate: Friday Meeting, Novice Training Update, and Worlds

Exciting Fall Events

1) Meeting Locations 2) Novice Training Day 3) World's Selection 4) Novice Tournament 5) Tournament Sign-up: BP Nats in Edmonton 6) CUSIDnet access 1) Meeting Locations We have a location for tomorrow's debate meeting. We will be meeting at 7pm in Fenn Lounge, just off of Res Com. For the meeting this Friday we have yet to confirm a location but that will be determined shortly. With the strike now over we hopefully will have regular rooms booked by next week. Keep checking our Facebook group, website and your e-mail for more details. 2) Novice Training Day Our Novice Training Day will be taking place this Saturday here at Carleton University. It will start at 9:00am and should be done by 4:00pm. We will have two world champions giving seminars in the morning and following a free lunch, we will be having debate rounds in the afternoon. It promises to be a great day and a fantastic chance to learn from, literally, the best in the world. All experienced debaters are encouraged to attend this fantastic event. 3) World's Selection This year CUDS will be sending one team to the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) in Thailand. We are currently looking for applicants for this tournament. Those interested in applying must submit their best three university debating results to exec(a)carletondebate.org by 4pm on Saturday September 22nd. We also encourage all novices who are interested to apply for World's. Don't worry about the lack of results as the more important component is the debate-off. Once all applications have been received, a time and place for the debate-off will be selected. Also please feel free to contact the executive via e-mail if you have additional questions. 4) Novice Tournament at York This year's Central Canadian Novice Championships will be held at York University on the weekend of September 28th to 30th. This tournament is only for new debaters and we encourage all novices to attend. It traditionally is one of the most fun weekends of the year and York is going to put on a great show this year. We will be leaving Friday morning from rescom and will return Sunday evening to Carleton. For all those who want to attend please e-mail exec(a)carletondebate.org or sign up on the CUSIDnet thread. We need to know numbers ASAP so the sooner the better. 5) Tournament Sign-up: BP Championships in Edmonton This years British Parliamentary Championships will be hosted by U of A in Edmonton on the weekend of November 2nd to 4th. We will be flying to this tournament so we need to know numbers as soon as possible. We encourage anyone who would be interested to sign up on the relevant CUSIDnet thread or to e-mail exec(a)carletondebate.org. Any debater who is interested is encouraged to apply, regardless of experience or skill. 6) CUSIDnet Sign up CUSIDnet is CUDS' home on the internet. First Meeting Details

1) First Meeting Details 2) Friday Debate Social 1)First Meeting Details We have a location for our first meeting! It will be Wednesday, September 12th at 7pm in Commons Grill in rescom. The line-up for our show debate Wednesday night has been finalized and will feature, among others, the top debater in North America. We hope to see everyone out for this great event. If you have ever been interested in debating then this is your chance to come out and see a world class debate with no commitment required. Hope to see you there. 2) Friday Debate Social This coming Friday night we will be having a debate-themed potluck social. All pros will be expected to make some kind of debate themed food while new members of CUDS can attend and enjoy a night of food and fun. If everyone could who is bringing food could please post on CUSIDnet saying what they are bringing. Welcome to Another Year

Constructive Points 1) Welcome to CUDS 2) First Meeting and Show Debate 3) Novice Training Day 4) Novice Tournament 5) CUDS on the internet 1) Welcome Welcome to all new members of the Carleton University Debating Society. It was great to meet all of you at the Prelude Table on Wednesday and we hope that you can make it out to our first meeting this coming Wednesday. We have an exciting year planned this year which includes Carleton hosting the North American Championships in January. As well, there will be tournaments in Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Halifax and many other places. Carleton is currently home to the top speaker in North America and we are looking to build off of our success last year to make this the best year for CUDS ever! 2) First Meeting and Show Debate The first meeting of the year will take place on Wednesday September 12th at 7pm. The location is still to be determined as room booking is delayed due to the strike. However we will send out an e-mail once we have a location. It also will be posted on the website and CUSIDnet. We hope to see as many people as possible out at our first meeting which will include a show debate and a brief introduction to debating. In conjunction with RRRA, CUDS will be hosting a show debating in Residence on the evening of September 16th (That is a Sunday). There will also be a guest speaker speaking on transit issues facing Ottawa and other cities. This is a great opportunity to see some world class debaters go at it and we hope that as many people as possible can come out to this event. 3) Novice Training Day Our annual novice training day will be held this year at Carleton on Saturday, September the 22nd in conjunction with the English Debating Society from . We will be having two world champions as well as other highly qualified debaters there to teach the basics of debating. Lunch will also be provided. In the afternoon there will be a chance for all new debaters to debate with experienced debaters. If all experienced debaters could come out for at least the afternoon that would be greatly appreciated. 4) Novice Tournament The annual Central Novice Championships will be held this year on the weekend of September 28th to 30th at York University in Toronto. This tournament is for all debaters new to debating. It is a fantastic weekend where you get to travel to Toronto and meet other debaters from all over Ontario and Quebec. More details will be given at our first meeting and at Novice Training Day but remember to keep that weekend open. 5) CUDS on the Internet We at the Carleton Univeristy Debating Society have our very own website located at www.carletondebate.org. Check the website for updates regarding tournaments, room locations and upcoming events. We also have our own online forum called CUSIDnet. It is a great place to find out info about and sign up for tournaments, discuss current events and get to know other debaters. To sign up, go to www.cusid.ca/community, create an account, and send a PM to "Adam Coombs" or "A.Law" to get access to our forum.
