Weekly Meetings
CUDS has two weekly regular meetings in 411 Southam Hall at 5:30pm Wednesday & 2:30pm
Friday. Everyone is welcome to come out; no experience is required. Feel free to come
late or leave early if necessary. These meetings are in addition to CUDS President Mike
Powell's case-building session in the Mike's Place grad bar every Wednesday
between 1:00 and 2:30 pm. The best way to find out who is coming to a particular meeting
is to network via the CUDS forum.
CUDS: Semi-Finalists at Nationals
For the second year running, the Carleton University Debating Society placed a strong
finish at the National Debating Championship, with the team of Padraic Ryan and Ike Awgu
finishing fourth overall, and as second-place Novice team.
The two finished the qualifier rounds with a 5-1 record and a 7th place ranking. Beating
Alberta law in the quarter-finals, they lost their semi-final round to a team from York
University. Individually, Ryan finished as 15th place speaker, and Awgu, who was attending
his first tournament, 25th.
Congratulations to both, and the rest of the CUDS contingent, for another successful
showing at the National Championships.
AGM Date and Provisions for Proxy Voting
The CUDS Annual General Meeting is set for April 2nd at 5:00 in the usual Friday room, 411
Southam Hall. More information on what promises to be an interminable session of ribald
debauchery awaits on the forum. If you need to vote by proxy, please indicate as much on
the thread.
At this AGM, CUDS will elect our executive for the 2004-05 school year. These are the

executive duties, chairing meetings, communications with CUSID and the University. Will be
the vote holder for CUSID meetings. Official voice of the Society. Tie breaking vote in
cases of ties. May delegate responsibilities as need be.
b.. Vice-President Communications - Responsible for recruitment and promotions. Also
responsible for maintenance of web site. Responsible for keeping membership informed of
all upcoming events. Will also liaison with external groups (other debating societies,
media, etc.) with regards to CUDS events.
c.. Vice-President Debate - Responsible for organizing CUDS participation in external
debating events and organizing internal CUDS events.
d.. Vice-President Fundraising - Responsible for fundraising initiatives both external
and internal to the University.

CUSID, and is elected by fellow novices.
If you are interested in running for a position, let the CUDS community know by posting to
the relevant thread on the CUDS forum. To run for an executive position, you must be a
full member of the club-this includes paying your $5 membership fee.
Judging at Ashbury College
Ashbury College, a private Ottawa secondary school, will be hosting the provincial
debating championships April 3. Many of you indicated on the forum that you were
interested in volunteering to judge at the event. Visit the appropriate thread to ensure
that you have contacted the appropriate staff member at Ashbury if you want to sign up.
Want to attend Guelph Novice?

Ontario promises to be the last novice-exclusive tournament of the year. Sign up for this
