1. Call for volunteers for Xerxes
Our annual Xerxes high school debating tournament is only four weeks away
(November 11-13), and we are looking for any and all volunteers to help us
run the tournament. Our tournament directors, Jessica Scorpio and Jordan
Charbonneau (contact: xerxes(a)carletondebate.org), are looking for people to
help out specifically in the areas of judging and food. Bearing in mind the
hard work that is going into organizing this tournament and making it
successful, this is the perfect chance for all our members to show their
support for the club by coming out and helping out.
2. Worlds qualifier results
Congratualtions to Padraic Ryan and Garnett Genuis, who will be representing
CUDS at the World Debating Championships in Dublin, Ireland! Padraic and
Garnett emerged victorious after a long qualifying process, and our best
wishes will go with them as they represent the club overseas in December.
3. Novice representative elections
Novices take note: the election for novice representative will be taking
place during this coming Wednesday's meeting, on October 19th. The CUDS
Constitution defines the role of the Novice Rep as follows:
Article 3(iv): Novice Representative Responsible for representing the
interests of novice members in the Society. To be eligible, a candidate
must hold novice status, as defined by CUSID, and is elected by fellow
novices no later than October 30.
If you are interested in this position, please either email the executive at
exec(a)carletondebate.org or post a notice of your interest on CUSIDnet.
Please also send us a brief blurb (max 200 words) about any relevant
experience that you have for the position. These blurbs will be compiled
and sent out before the election so that people can get a sense of why you
will kick ass at this job. Please also note that our nominees will be
expected to give a brief schpiel immediately before the vote on Wednesday.
If you are a novice and unable to attend, please contact the executive to
let us know if you wish to vote by proxy, or if you would like to run for
Novice Rep and have a member of the exec read your schpiel for you in your
absense at the meeting.
4. Hoodies
Official CUDS hoodies are now available! If you ordered a custom embroidered
hoodie or if you're just interested in getting a standard hoodie, contact
Ben at president(a)carletondebate.org to arrange pick-up. The cost is $17.50
for each of these finely crafted, high-class pieces of merchandise.
5. Guindon Pro-Am
Ottawa University's Guindon Pro-Am (October 28-30) is proving to be a
popular pick amongst our novices, and the demand for pros has so far
outstripped the supply! If you're a veteran debater and you've got a clear
weekend on October 28-30, we'd love you have you out debating with our
up-and-comers. This is the perfect chance to teach those young
whipper-snappers a thing or two!
