*Help with the Yes! Campaign*
On February 8 and 9, students will be asked in a referendum whether
or not to grant the Debating Society a one dollar student levy. But
we need help! Running a campaign takes a lot of time and effort,
*so we need help from absolutely every club member in order to mount
an effective campaign*. If you would like to help out, contact
Padraic at *yes(a)carletondebate.org <mailto:yes@carletondebate.org>*.
For more information, you can visit
*http://www.carletondebate.org/yes*. The website will be up shortly.
*Lord Dorchester Cup Help*
On March 4-6, we will be holding the 2005 Lord Dorchester Cup, our
annual intervarsity debating tournament. It's always a great time,
but to put on a good show, we need people to be judges, runners, and
help out with other logistical tasks. Over the course of the
weekend, you'll be fed and have access to a great party. So, mark
your calendars and if you would like to sign up to volunteer,
contact *dorchester(a)carletondebate.org*
<mailto:dorchester@carletondebate.org>.
*University of Ottawa High School Tournament*
This weekend (February 4-5), the University of Ottawa English
Debating Society will be holding their high school tournament and
they need help with judging. If you would like to judge, contact
the tournament director, Meg Wilcox, at

<>*Open Panel Discussion with Aileen Carroll*
<>/*The following is an invitation to an open discussion panel with
Aileen Carrol, Minister of International Cooperation:*/
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), in partnership
with Carleton University's School of Journalism and Communication,
is hosting a public forum on Tuesday, February 1, 2005, as part of
International Development Week.
Minister of International Cooperation Aileen Carroll will open a
panel discussion on the topic "After the headlines: Canadian aid in
the long term." Leading experts from academia, non-governmental
organizations, and the media will provide their perspectives on the
links between the Canadian response to the tsunami disaster and our
commitment to long-term sustainable development as called for in the
Millennium Development Goals. The panel will also discuss the links
among poverty, vulnerability to disasters of human and of natural
origin, and the role of the media.
Speakers include:
* Huguette Labelle, Chancellor of the University of Ottawa and
former president of CIDA
* Dr. Pierre Duplessis, Secretary General, Canadian Red Cross
* Parker Mitchell, Co-CEO, Engineers Without Borders
* Allan Thompson, Associate Professor, Carleton School of
Journalism and Communication
The forum is open to the public. Seating is limited and available on
first come, first served basis. The audience will be invited to
participate in a question and answer session with panelists.
The forum will also feature exhibits by key aid organizations active
in the tsunami relief effort.
International Development Week is an annual opportunity for
Canadians active in international development to share ideas and to
raise public awareness of global development challenges. Visit
CIDA's website <
