WELCOME!
On behalf of the Executive, I would like to welcome everyone to the
Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS).
As a non-partisan entity, we invite students from all of Carletons
faculties and departments to join us in improving their public speaking
and critical thinking skills. We have meetings weekly and compete in
tournaments with other universities nation-wide.
We invite members to participate casually or on the competitive circuit.
In the spirit of inclusiveness, we subsidize a large component of
tournament costs for all members. Recently, we have been extremely
successful at the competitive level, placing fourth among a field of over
70 teams at last years national championships at McGill University.
I invite everyone to our first meeting on September 15 (Room 520 Southam
Hall). While all of our meetings are open to everyone, this meeting will
be a great opportunity to become better acquainted with our debating
format as well as free snacks. We will put on a debate round with senior
members and will host a post-mortem involving all those present for their
thoughts and analysis. Afterwards, there will be time to participate in a
debate round for those who would like to.
Overall, getting involved with CUDS is a great opportunity to travel the
country, meet new people, and build lifelong skills in an inclusive and
open environment.
Yours in Debate,
Andrew Christie
CUDS President
2004-2005
NOVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS
If you have never debated at a CUSID debating tournament before, the CUSID
Central Canadian Novice Championships are for you! The tournament, to be
held this year at the University of Sherbrooke, will be the first
tournament of the year for CUDS and is intended to teach and hone your
debating skills. The tournament will take place from October 1 to 3.
Parlez-vous français? The tournament will also feature a parallel French
debating tournament for those with little or no experience on the circuit.
As always, the club will be subsidizing the costs of the tournament with
the exception of the $20 commitment fee. If you wish to go, please sign
up for the tournament at the signup sheet located at the front of the room
at every meeting or post in the appropriate thread on our CUSIDnet forum.
